Dynamic Range
Maximize the remarkable dynamic range offered by the sensors in Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. Utilize the full potential of the sensors to create visually appealing images, avoiding the “video look.”
Color Accuracy
This LUT aims for the utmost color accuracy while preserving the natural colors captured by the sensors. It subtly adjusts certain areas to enhance cinematic quality.
Highlight Roll-off
Attain a natural film-like highlight roll-off and expand highlight recovery capabilities without sacrificing information using the included Highlight Recovery Pre-LUT.
When comparing our LUTs to Nikon’s official N-log technical conversion LUT, you’ll notice significant differences in color tonality, saturation levels, and handling of overexposure. Nikon’s official LUT often produces a “video look” due to excessive contrast, resulting in blown-out highlights and loss of information, as well as oversaturation leading to unnatural color rendition.
In contrast, with SC’s Nikon N-Log technical conversion LUT, we meticulously fine-tune our colors to achieve natural and clean tones while preserving rich tonality. We also refine the behavior of highlight roll-off to impart a cinematic appearance to your footage, effectively maximizing the dynamic range of your Nikon Z camera.
In our example here, we highlight how the blue tones in the sky are destroyed by excessive contrast and color management, while improper exposure control leads to lifted shadow levels and increased noise in shadow areas.
When shooting in N-Log, follow these recommended settings for correct results:
Supported Recording formats for N-LOG:
Note: To achieve proper exposure when using these LUTs, it is advisable to exposure your image with an 18% gray card approximately 37 on the IRE scale for N-Log. (Following the principle of Expose To The Right (ETTR), you can safely overexposure the image slightly upwards by 0.5-1.0 stops while ensuring the highlights remain unclipped).
